German Enemy Aliens in the Land of the Sky: A World War I German Internment Camp in Hot Springs, North Carolina

April 14, 2013 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Little is known about the existence of the German prisoner-of-war stockade in the mountain community of Hot Springs, North Carolina during World War I. The collective memory has nearly faded from view. This event illuminates the history of Hot Springs as a prisoner-of-war camp, traces the prisoner’s year-long ordeal behind the stockades of North Carolina’s only World War I enemy-alien prison and reflects its memory. Program introduced and moderated by Jocelyn Neal, director, CSAS.

Reading: 4:00 – 5:00 pm, Terry Roberts reads from his new novel, A Short Time to Stay Here.

Documentary Screening and Discussion: 5:15 – 7:15 pm, Kevin Kennedy, Professor of German, Appalachian State University, shows his documentary, German Enemy Aliens in the Land of the Sky.

Co-sponsored by the North Carolina German Studies Series, CSAS, and the Department of History. Contributing partners include Carolina Seminars, The Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies, the Duke and UNC Centers for European Studies, the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities, and the Duke and UNC Departments of Germanic Languages and Literatures and History.
