Fifty in Five Challenge
Dear Friends,
It is my great pleasure to share with you a wonderful opportunity that has become available to the Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS)—the Fifty in Five Challenge. A generous UNC alumna, Dr. Druscilla French, has agreed to match all gifts, up to $50,000, that are made to the Center from October 15, 2018, through March 15, 2019. If we collectively can raise $50,000 in five months, the Fifty in Five Challenge will result in $100,000 in unrestricted funds to support the Center’s growth and future.
“I support CSAS because I am deeply rooted in the American South and because their scholars are bringing fresh eyes to our history and our future.”
—Druscilla French, PhD
As we look to the future, all gifts received during the Fifty in Five Challenge will enable the Center to keep working toward its ambitious goals, drawing on the University’s comprehensive strengths in medicine, the environment, and entrepreneurship, as well as history, literature, and the arts. In order for us to reach these goals, the Center needs to:
- expand its research, publication, and outreach, breaking down barriers between scholars and publics;
- teach the skills that students need to pursue their goals and change their communities; and
- become the first place that journalists, researchers, opinion-makers, and decision-makers turn when they want to understand the region.
To achieve this vision, we need the support of our Carolina community. Our destiny is not written for us but by us—and now, more than ever, the nation’s eyes are turned to the South, and to UNC. With your support, the Center can continue to drive collaborations between scholars, students, artists, and communities to make the region just, prosperous, and healthy. We hope you will consider making your gift today and join us as we lead the nation’s conversation about Carolina’s home region.
Sincerely,
Malinda Maynor Lowery, PhD
