FREE CONCERT – MUSIC ON THE PORCH WITH MANDOLIN ORANGE AND RYAN GUSTAFSON
SEPTEMBER 30 FROM 5 – 7 PM

MANDOLIN ORANGE

Songwriter Andrew Marlin and vocalist/instrumentalist Emily Frantz make up the Carrboro duo Mandolin Orange. Marlin and Frantz pair distinct musical roles to stylize songs inspired by their country, jazz and bluegrass forebears. The duo ornaments lyrical songs with violin, mandolin, and acoustic and electric guitars. The duo toured throughout the southeast following the May 1 release of their debut album, Quiet Little Room, which earned critical acclaim and heavy airplay in the region. The slow country duets of Quiet Little Room reflect the influence of traditional music on the duo’s progressive style, providing a sound that’s uniquely their own yet satisfyingly familiar. On September 30, Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz will team up with Ryan Gustafson to chat about the their approaches to songwriting, making music, and to perform original material.

“…between Marlin’s electric and Frantz’s rhythm guitar, its story interestingly told and its obviously well-considered execution represent everything that’s so splendid about Quiet Little Room.” (Independent Weekly)

RYAN GUSTAFSON

Former front man for modern rock band Bombbox,  Ryan’s Donkey album aims for a vintage feel, using lo-fi recording equipment to make his folk tunes sound even more like the classics.  He infuses his new songs with classic rock, pop, soul, Americana and even psychedelia.  They sound like they could have been recorded in an earlier era.

“….splendid Americana tunes tempered by classic pop/rock sensibilities.” (Independant Weekly)

Grayson Currin, music editor for the Independent Weekly, contributor to Pitchfork and curator for the Hopscotch Music Festival,  will be moderating the discussions that accompany the performances.
