Dear Friends,

Now more than ever, the South needs UNC; UNC is our region’s beating heart. The most rigorous scholarship and critical conversations in our area take place every day at UNC’s Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS). We need your support to ensure that we continue to tackle the great issues and opportunities of the day.

CSAS is actively working to host conversations and collaborations on how the past informs the present. Recent announcements about a plan for Silent Sam raise important questions about the most inclusive solution. We value creativity, knowledge, research, and the free and joyful movement of ideas, which is why we have invited UNC community members to envision UNC’s future through art, with a special emphasis on research and collaboration. You can learn more about this initiative here. Your support is critical to continue a healthy, open dialogue at UNC during this critical time.

As you may know, Dr. Druscilla French recently made the generous commitment to match all gifts that are made to CSAS through March 2019, up to $50,000. As we approach the end of 2018, we have already raised a remarkable $11,277! We look forward to continuing our Fifty in Five challenge in the new year, but we will need everyone’s help to accomplish this goal.

At CSAS, we seek to break down barriers, expand our research, reach new audiences, and prepare the next generations of scholars and leaders in communities across the South. None of this would be possible without the generous support of friends like you. I hope you will choose to help us as we seek to catalyze the nation’s conversations about the South, by making your gift today.

Sincerely,

Malinda Maynor Lowery, PhD
Associate Professor of History
Director, Center for the Study of the American South
