A black and white photograph portrait of Marvel Cooke.
Marvel Cooke

The play Edges of Time (directed by Jules Odendahl-James, starring Kathryn Hunter-Williams) premieres this month. Not only was Cooke the first woman and first Black person to work for the New York City leftist newspaper The Daily Compass, but she broke her big story by going undercover as a housekeeper to expose the economic exploitation of Black women. Go behind the scenes of the play with dramaturg Jacqueline Lawton, and buy tickets to stream the play.
