President Trump drew a crowd to his recent rally in Lumberton, N.C., including members of the Lumbee Tribe. Weeks after former Vice President Joe Biden pledged to support Lumbee federal recognition, Trump now says he’s also in support. In in an interview with The News and Observer, UNC Historian and Lumbee Tribe member Dr. Malinda Maynor Lowery argued that federal recognition is not a cure-all, but rather just one piece of a complicated puzzle to truly support the community in Robeson County. One of the poorest counties in the state, Robeson’s residents continue to recover from hurricane damage and high COVID-19 rates.
