Panelists explored the fight for the right to vote by women of color. The Center for the Study of the American South was proud to co-sponsor this Sept. 27, 2020 event. 2020 is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the ballot, and the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. Yet, women of color have faced unique challenges in exercising their rights…and still, we persist.

Valerie Ann Johnson, PhD, Dean of Arts, Sciences, & Humanities and Co-Director of the Center for Racial and Social Justice, Shaw University, presented the keynote. Panelists included Dr. Mary Jones Phillips, Kim Pevia, Dr. Annette Rodriguez, PhD, Dr. Hongbin Gu, PhD, Lucy Lewis, and Terri Lorant.
