Join us at the Love House on Sept 25 for Black Out Loud: Representations and Resilience. This evening of art and conversation invites UNC students, staff, faculty, and the greater community to bring their whole selves to the table in order to forge new futures at the university and in the American South.
“What does it mean to be seen as a guest in the home that your ancestors built?” This is one of many questions curators Cortland Gilliam and Jerry J. Wilson have been pondering about representations of Blackness at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a historically white, public university in the American South.
The resulting examination of the unspoken agreement that underlies Southern Hospitality is what inspired this project. #BlackOutLoudUNC is an exploration of what happens when Black folks refuse to perform the “contented and grateful” demeanor required of guests, and instead insist on being whole beings.
