LOCAL MUSICIAN CONCERT AND CONVERSATION ON THE PORCH OF THE LOVE HOUSE AND HUTCHINS FORUM

Center for the Study of the American South presents “Music on the Porch: Featuring the Music of Heather McEntire, Adam Price, Eric Roehrig, and Lee Waters ”

CHAPEL HILL, NC, APRIL 24, 2009, 5–7 P.M.  Live music and conversation on the porch of the Love House and Hutchins Forum featuring Heather McEntire (Bellafea, Un Deux Trois), Adam Price (Hundred Air, The Mayflies USA), Eric Roehrig (Erie Choir, Sorry About Dresden), and Lee Waters (Work Clothes, Lud).  The event will be moderated by Katherine Doss, who received her M.A. in Folklore from UNC–Chapel Hill. The event is open to the public at no charge.

The Center for the Study of the American South will again host an intimate, engaging late afternoon of music on the porch of the Love House and Hutchins Forum featuring performances by local musicians. Each artist will perform original songs and participate in questions and conversation about the vibrant creative community here in the Triangle, and how our region has influenced her or his musical aesthetic.

Heather McEntire hails from the valley of Green Creek, NC.. She started playing guitar and writing songs at the age of 18, and moved to Chapel Hill in 2003 after college. Heather plays with and writes songs for Bellafea, Mount Moriah, and Un Deux Trois, and has collaborated with various other groups such as The Rosebuds and Megafaun. She also “co-runs” local independent label Holidays for Quince Records, and has worked at Go! Room 4, Nightlight, Schoolkids Records, and CD Alley.

Adam Price spent his childhood in Holland and Saudi Arabia, and his teenage years in Knoxville, TN. He moved to Chapel Hill in 1994 to attend UNC and play music, and helped start The Mayflies USA in 1996. Adam has played with The Comas, Work Clothes, North Elementary, and Jennyanykind. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2003, Adam returned in 2006 and started Hundred Air with an all-star cast of local musicians from outfits such as Transportation, Jet Rink, and Cub Country.

Eric Roehrig was born in New York State and grew up in High Point, NC. He graduated from UNC in 1996, after which he helped form the group Sorry About Dresden. After SAD slowed down their touring around 2002, Eric started Erie Choir, recruiting a formidable lineup of musicians from groups such as The White Octave, June, The Nein, and Audubon Park.

Lee Waters came to Chapel Hill from Long Island, NY in the late ’90s. He primarily played drums in outfits such as Cobra Kahn, Panzer, and Ghost of Rock until starting Work Clothes with his wife Jenny Waters in 2002. There he wrote, sang, and self depreciatingly “faked the guitar” until they quit playing last year. Lee has recorded and toured with acts from around the world including The Rosebuds, Camera Obscura, Portastatic, and David Kilgour.

Katherine Doss received her M.A. in Folklore at UNC in 2008 under the guidance of music scholar William Ferris. Her research interests include Southern music and she has written extensively on this topic for both local and regional journals.
